Job Title:  Tile Setter 

Type of Role: (Contract)

Expected Length of Contract: (2-3 Months)

Shift / Hours: Variable 

Location: Monterey, CA

Hourly Range: $25 – $28/Hour 

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Tile Setter who specializes in manual tile installation without the use of power tools. This position requires a high level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the ability to work quietly and cleanly in environments where animal welfare is a top priority.

Key Responsibilities:

• Measure and mark surfaces to be tiled using manual tools (chalk lines, rulers, levels).

• Cut tiles by hand using scoring and snapping tools or manual tile cutters (no power saws or grinders).

• Prepare surfaces for tiling, including leveling and cleaning.

• Lay tile in precise, visually appealing patterns with proper spacing and alignment.

• Mix and apply adhesives and grout by hand.

• Clean work areas thoroughly, maintaining a tidy and hazard-free environment throughout the project.

• Work silently and respectfully around animals—avoiding noise, sudden movements, or disruption.

• Ensure completed work meets high standards of quality, durability, and aesthetics.

Requirements:

• Proven experience as a tile setter or similar manual trade.

• Skilled in using manual tile-cutting tools and hand tools (e.g., trowels, floats, sponges).

• Strong understanding of different tile types and surface preparation techniques.

• Ability to perform physical tasks including bending, lifting, and kneeling for extended periods.

• High standard of cleanliness and organization during and after work.

• Must be comfortable working in environments with animals and maintain a calm, quiet demeanor.

• Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow design plans precisely.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in animal-sensitive environments (e.g., sanctuaries, vet clinics, private homes with pets).

• Background in eco-conscious or low-impact construction methods.

• References from past projects with manual, noise-free installations.

Work Environment & Expectations:

• No power tools allowed on site due to noise sensitivity and safety of nearby animals.

• Work must be conducted with minimal disruption — cleanliness and discretion are essential.

• Must be self-sufficient and able to complete tasks independently with little supervision.
