Job Title: Safety Specialist
Type of Role: Direct Hire
Shift / Hours: Monday – Friday (7am – 3pm)
Location: San Antonio
Hourly Range: $30
A Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and maintaining workplace health and safety programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting a culture of safety throughout the organization. This role works closely with management and employees to implement safety initiatives, conduct facility inspections, monitor hazards, and assist with incident investigations to help prevent workplace injuries. The Safety Specialist coordinates safety training, maintains safety records and documentation, and supports the development of corrective actions and continuous improvement efforts. Additionally, this position helps to oversee emergency response preparedness, environmental monitoring, and employee safety awareness to ensure safe and compliant operations across all facilities.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Coordinates with management and partner company resources to determine applicable health & safety programs for implementation.
- Prepare proposal for annual safety improvement goal setting.
- Coordinates development and implementing company safety initiatives.
- Coordinate establishment and leads safety committees to assess, guide and implement a variety of safety programs.
- Implement instructional programs and materials to train employees in safe work practices and incident prevention; oversees all safety training records.
- Implement programs to identify significant hazards and develop corrective action.
- Performs regular physical inspections of facilities & grounds, equipment, vehicles, and operations; identifies hazards and incidents of regulatory non-compliance and recommends corrective measures.
- Personally responds to serious accidents or emergencies to ensure proper responses and investigation.
- Keeps informed on all existing and proposed changes in health & safety regulations and provides consultation to management, supervisors, and employees regarding workplace health & safety issues.
- Monitors compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local safety laws & regulations, as well as compliance with mandated company policies and procedures; prepare safety & health related regulatory reports.
- Administers, organizes, and maintains safety records and documents, and reviews and verifies accuracy of safety data or reports pertaining to safety.
- Provides management with safety loss trend data and analyses.
- Advise on the need for required safety certifications, e.g., forklift, crane, environmental hazard, first aid, etc.
- Implements employee health/environmental monitoring and testing processes and reports, e.g., noise control, chemical, biological exposure, etc.
- Implements controls to ensure that safety programs are executed.
- Ensure that Emergency Response Programs for evacuation and medical responses are in place at all locations.
- Promote communication programs to enhance and encourage employee awareness of safety compliance, including appropriate signage.
- Implement guidelines for appropriate personal protective equipment for all employees.
- Coordinate the establishment of local safety committees and ensure their continuation.
- Order the cessation of operations where imminent danger is evident.
- Seek technical consultants when needed for matters related to health & safety.
- Monitors Environmental Management System pursuant to ISO 14001; provides internal consultation to management and training when necessary.
Skills and Experience:
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, workplace safety standards, and environmental compliance requirements.
- Ability to identify hazards, conduct safety inspections, and recommend corrective actions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Effective communication and training skills to educate employees on safety procedures and compliance requirements.
- Ability to analyze safety data and provide reports to management on trends and improvement opportunities.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain safety documentation, records, and regulatory reports.
- Ability to collaborate with management and lead safety initiatives or committees to promote a safe work environment.
