Job Title: Set-Up Technician
Type of Role: Contract to Hire
Shift / Hours: Union City, CA
Hourly Range: $23 – $25/hr
- 1st 7am-3:30pm
- 2nd 3pm-11:30pm – addl $1 /hr shift differential
- 3rd 11pm-7:30am – addl $2 /hr shift differential
Role and Responsibilities:
The Set-Up Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient, safe, and accurate installation and startup of injection molds, machines, and related support equipment. This individual is responsible for mold changeovers, material handling, documentation, and ensuring the readiness of the molding area to support production. The role requires a highly organized and mechanically skilled technician with strong communication, presentation, systems understanding, and analytical thinking abilities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Setup & Operation
- Perform accurate and timely mold installations, startups, and changeovers in coordination with the Molding Engineer.
- Ensure correct hookups of all mold interfaces including water, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic connections.
- Operate molding machines and auxiliary equipment to execute sample runs or full production as required.
- Tag, clean, and store molds in accordance with site protocols and preventive maintenance standards.
2. Communication & Documentation
- Conduct daily turnover meetings or submit detailed written updates to ensure seamless shift-to-shift communication.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of setup processes, mold performance, material data, and shift activities using the E2 Shop System or other ERP tools.
- Participate in sampling reviews and mold validations, communicating results effectively to cross-functional teams.
3. System Management & Analytical Thinking
- Support mold tryouts and process development by setting parameters, analyzing outputs, and documenting findings.
- Assist in analyzing and resolving equipment or process issues, providing data-driven insights and corrective recommendations.
- Follow mold handling and production processes according to documented standards and ensure compliance with safety, quality, and production systems.
4. Maintenance & Housekeeping
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the plant floor, molding machines, support equipment, and mold storage areas.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance on machines and support equipment as directed.
- Support raw material handling including mixing, drying, inventory control, and documentation of usage and batch integrity.
5. Cross-Functional Support
- Assist in shipping and receiving preparations as needed, especially for tooling, molds, and related components.
Skills and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in injection molding or mechanical systems preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a molding technician or setup technician role in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to perform safe mold installations and operate all molding machines and auxiliary equipment.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 100 lbs. infrequently and work on feet for extended periods.
