Job Title: Director of Finance
Type of Role: Direct Hire
Shift / Hours: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm
Location: Salinas, CA
Salary Range: $85k – $120k
Position Summary
The Director of Finance is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for overseeing all financial operations. This role ensures the financial health, sustainability, and compliance of the organization while supporting its mission to serve older adults and adults with disabilities.
The Director of Finance partners closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to drive financial strategy, manage risk, and provide data-driven insights that inform organizational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the organization’s mission and long-term goals
- Serve as a key advisor to the Executive Director and Board of Directors on financial planning and performance
- Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes across all programs and departments
- Provide strategic financial analysis to support growth, funding diversification, and program expansion
Accounting & Financial Management
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and month-end close
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and reports
- Maintain internal controls and safeguard organizational assets
- Manage cash flow, investments, and reserves
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP), federal/state regulations, and grant requirements
- Oversee audits, tax filings (including Form 990), and regulatory reporting
- Manage financial reporting for government contracts, grants, and funding agencies
- Maintain strong relationships with auditors and external partners
Grants & Fund Management
- Collaborate with program and development teams to build grant budgets and track restricted funding
- Monitor grant expenditures and ensure compliance with funding requirements
- Support grant reporting and financial reconciliation
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop finance and accounting staff
- Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement
- Partner cross-functionally with operations, HR, and program teams
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
- 7+ years of progressive financial leadership experience (preferably in nonprofit or public sector)
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant management, and compliance
- Experience managing budgets, audits, and financial reporting
- Demonstrated leadership and team management experience
Preferred
- CPA or Master’s degree (MBA, MPA, or similar)
- Experience working with government funding and contracts
- Familiarity with nonprofit financial systems and ERP platforms
